Case Study: Ultra-Web Means Worry-Free

Joe Garceau, co-owner of decorative concrete products manufacturer Butterfield Color, Aurora, Ill., no longer wonders if his dust collectors and filters are doing the job. That's because he installed two new Donaldson® Torit® Downflo® Oval dust collectors with Ultra-Web® cartridge filters in July 2007.

"These collectors and filters do an exceptional job," said Garceau. "When you look at the entire picture-there is less labor because we don't change the filters as often, less worry, less hassle and we're able to focus on other things."

Highly efficient, reliable dust collection is a must for Butterfield Color. The company blends a wide variety of powdered materials including pigments, sand and cement, all of which generate fine dust particles.

MERV 13-rated Ultra-Web nanofiber filters have a proven 25-year track record of collecting 0.3 micron and larger dust particles at high efficiency levels. Ultra-Web has also been perfected over the years to provide the right fiber size that can withstand the rigors of high heat and humidity.

Ultra-Web was the ideal filter for Butterfield in combination with the Downflo Oval dust collectors that provide 25% more airflow than traditional dust collectors, an improved airflow path, and a 29% increase in pulse cleaning pressure.

With pressure drop holding steady at less than 2 inches water gauge for the first six months, Garco doesn't anticipate a filter change for at least another nine months. That's a big switch from the previous cabinet collector and baghouse systems that Butterfield operated before installing the Downflo collectors and Ultra-Web filters.

"The cabinet collector worked okay, but it was difficult to keep the filters clean. And the bags would cake quickly, so we always had to keep a close eye on it and change the filters often to make sure we met air permit requirements," said Garceau.

With the Downflo collectors and Ultra-Web filters, the noise level is down considerably and there is noticeably less dust in the plant, Garceau added.

Prior to deciding on Donaldson Torit technology, Garceau considered the options offered by other dust collector and filter manufacturers. Beyond the worry-free technology of Downflo collectors and Ultra-Web filters, Donaldson Torit dealer Pollution Control Systems, Inc., Rolling Meadows, Ill. offered excellent service and turnkey installation.

"We used to try and install the equipment in-house, but we really didn't have the expertise," said Garceau. "They actually did it cheaper than we could have done it and they did a better job."
